Sigils & Mantras

Sigils and mantras are the symbolic medium for sorcery. The spell's work is carried not in a physical object but in a symbolic pattern — a written sigil, a spoken mantra, a drawn diagram — that operates through the meaning encoded in the pattern itself.

Their strength is precision. By controlling the pattern exactly, the practitioner can specify the operation's behavior with much finer detail than physical mediums allow. Their weakness is technical demand — any error in the pattern, in tone, or in proportion typically aborts the operation.

On this page we walk sigils and mantras' character, operational styles, and limits.

Core characteristics

The defining properties that set this category apart from others.

  • Symbolic-pattern medium
Operates through the meaning encoded in patterns.
  • High precision
Patterns specify operation behavior in fine detail.
  • Error-fragile
Any error in the pattern aborts the operation.
  • Reproducible
Patterns can be copied for repeat operations.

How it differs from neighboring categories

Even within the same family, each category has a distinct character. Comparing side by side is the fastest way to grasp the differences.

Sigil / Mantra

Symbolic-pattern medium with high precision.

Totem / Charm

Physical-object medium with persistent operations.

Blood

Life-bond medium tied to a specific person.

True Name

Identity-binding medium with no physical or symbolic carrier.

When sigils and mantras shine

Best when the operation needs precise specification.

  • Precise effects
When the operation needs exact behavior.
  • Reproducible operations
Patterns can be copied for repeat use.
  • Group sorcery
Patterns can be drawn or chanted in coordination.
  • Contained operations
Drawn diagrams can contain or limit an operation's reach.

How sigils and mantras split

Inside the medium, several styles coexist.

Drawn-sigil style

Patterns drawn on paper, ground, or skin.

Spoken-mantra style

Patterns spoken as mantras or songs.

Composite style

Drawn and spoken patterns combined for stronger operations.

Limits of sigils and mantras

Precision comes with clear costs.

  • Error fragility
Any error in the pattern aborts the operation.
  • Pattern theft
Patterns can be copied by other sorcerers.
  • Material dependency
Drawn sigils need specific materials and conditions.

How sigil and mantra sorcerers grow

Their career runs through pattern accumulation.

Beginner sigil sorcerers learn a few simple patterns and basic precision.

Mid-rank brings a working repertoire of patterns the practitioner can perform reliably.

High rank brings out signature patterns distinctive to the practitioner.

Top-rank sigil sorcerers can compose new patterns for novel operations on demand.
