The unavoidable cost and repercussions that accompany the use of sorcery.

Cost-free sorcery essentially does not exist. The cost most often demanded is something irrecoverable — lifeforce, memory, time, emotion, or part of the soul.

The cost can be consumed immediately, or delayed and manifested later. In particular, pact-style sorcery generates a forced rebound when conditions are violated.

Repercussions can take many forms: internal injury, mental collapse, damage to one's existence, unintended distortions. In worldbuilding, the cost structure is the central device that creates sorcery's tension.
